In 2013 The Fishing Freaks were lucky enough to crack the nod to the 3 biggest kayak fishing events on the east coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The Salt Rock comp is one of the most eagerly anticipated fishing events.

The Salt Rock Kayak Fishing Comp is sponsored by Ballito Toyota amongst many others, and they have put up for grabs a brand new Toyota Hilux! HOWEVER, there is a “catch”… to be in line for that awesome vehicle you have to catch a king mackerel (couta) over 28 kgs (62lbs).

A special thanks to Shaun Reid and Fishing Corner for hosting such a fun and well supported fishing event. The Freaks look forward to the 2014 Salt Rock Fishing Comp.

  1. Hey Boyz, thanks for a great show. Keeps me smiling in cold, wet Pommie land.
Could you tell me the rig setup and bait you use to catch your live bait with please.

    • Dragonfly! Good to hear from you, we eagerly await Feb! Summer games have been pulling in fast of late. Big tuna around and a little drive up north has HEAPS of dorado! Couple bill fish too…

So we use a Sibiki Rig to get bait, something like this: http://www.lakemichiganangler.com/store/photos/sbk.jpg

Works really well, however if the bait fish are reluctant to take it (very very rare) you can add some bait strips onto each hook and this will ensure a take. Personally I love fishing with live bait over all else. In Durban there are a great selection of pelagics that will take a live bait.

Keep in touch, look forward to the paddle.

      Regards

      Wez

      • I put up a photo of the feathers I will be bringing over in Feb on your Facebook page. I will be operating out of Westbrook mainly if you want to join me and use some Pommie feathers. Hopefully this will confuse the SA fish as we all know how clever they are 😉
